The
New Forests Project (NFP) is a people-to-people, direct-action program
established in 1982 in an effort to initiate reforestation and reduce
deforestation in developing countries. Since our inception the New Forests
Project has worked with more than 4,400 communities, in over 120 countries.
Our goals are to provide farmers, community organizations, and environmental
groups with the training and materials necessary to begin successful
reforestation projects and to protect their watersheds. With these tools,
we hope to offer farmers realistic alternatives to harvesting existing
tropical forests so that these threatened or already degraded forests
may have the chance to regenerate and flourish.
NFP is a project of the International Center. If you have any questions,
comments or want some information that is not provided at this site
please send us a note at nfp@newforestsproject.com.
We welcome you to browse the New Forests Website and learn more about
our projects and how trees affect our environment.
Philosophy:
The Earth is an
ecosystem made up of interdependent, interacting parts-- land, water,
air, animals, plants, and humans. The health of each part within the ecosystem
is dependent on the health of the other parts. Social conditions such
as poverty, disease, and population have a direct impact on the health
of the environment. Environmental conditions equally affect human health
and economy. To overcome environmental degradation and human poverty,
development projects must focus on the links within ecosystems. By focusing
on projects that improve the health of people and their economy, and which
protect and regenerate the environment, we hope to achieve balance in
the ecosystem, improving the health of the planet and quality of life.
