A Plan To End US Dependence On Foreign Oil And Slash Greenhouse Emissions

Scientific American, in the January 2008 issue, has outlined a brilliant plan to end U.S. dependence on foreign oil and slash greenhouse emissions through the use of solar energy. The plan demonstrates how solar power plants could supply 69 percent of the U.S’s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy by 2050. Understanding and supporting this plan could be critical to our businesses and our lives on this planet, so that’s why I’ve devoted this column to informing you about this program.
The potential of solar energy is enormous. The energy from sunlight that strikes the earth in just 40 minutes is equivalent to the total global energy consumption for an entire year, according to Scientific American. In the U.S., we have an a tremendous potential resource; 250,000 square miles …

Solar Energy As An Alternative Energy?

Solar energy as an alternative energy in our new house we are planning to build? Or so I thought. As my husband and I start the process of building a new home, I thought to myself, “Why not check into solar energy?”
Thus began my search for information on my trusty laptop. First, I learned that there is more than one method to harnessing solar energy. Photovoltaic solar energy uses solar panels to absorb sunlight and then through a conversion process, changes that sunlight into useable electricity. Photovoltaic solar energy is actually used on many small items today such as calculators and outdoor lights.
Indirect (or passive) solar heating is also another method of harnessing the sunlight. This process involves using special windows that transfer and holds heat inside the home. For …

All About Geothermal Renewable Energy

Geothermal energy is the Earth’s heat. It is the end result of the fusion of dust and gas which happened about four billion years ago.
Deep inside the earth’s core and approximately about 4,000 miles deep, the temperature is about 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Geothermal energy has been used for everything from bathing to relaxation and cooking as well as heating. The first geothermal generator was created in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1912 the United States followed with their attempt at creating geothermal power with The Geysers in California. The energy is now produced in over 21 countries of the world.
You can find geothermal energy deep in the ground. The heat at the core of the Earth flows outwards. When it flows the heat is transferred to …

Criticisms of Recycling

Humanity has advanced so much in terms of technology, society, and culture. It is necessary; we need to advance as we live in a world that has become more complex by the day. Unfortunately, we are abusing nature for this advancement. Our factories have emitted greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The need for timber and dwelling places resulted in the denudation of our forests. Our marine travel polluted seas. Our landfills contaminated groundwater. That is why we now have stronger hurricanes, more massive landslides, warmer climates, and escalated extinction; these are the consequences of damaging our world and the fragile ecosystems.
Astronomer Carl Sagan said in as commencement exercise in 1996 regarding a photograph titled The Pale Blue Dot (referring to the earth as seen by Voyager 1 6.4 billion miles …

Though many people have heard the warnings about drinking water from the tap, many people are still actually unaware of what is in our drinking water.
Even more people have no concerns what so ever about drinking water that comes from their faucet because they believe it must be safe and they have no actual idea of what is in our drinking water that can be harmful to us.
The environment is inundated with chemicals everyday that will eventually find their way into the water that we drink if it is not filtered with a quality drinking water system that filters these harmful chemicals out.
When we consider what is in our drinking water and come to the realization that the drinking water system in the United States contains over 2,100 chemicals that …
